Cystic Fibrosis

About Cystic Fibrosis

It is an inherited disorder, characterized by the excessive production of thick mucus. Cystic fibrosis is caused by mutations in the CFTR gene, that disrupts ion channel function at certain epithelial surfaces, resulting in the mucus buildup. The disease affects respiratory, reproductive or digestive system. Treatment lies in airway clearance, medications or surgery (only in advanced states).
