Polygenic score
Influential genes: SLC39A8,ADH, ALDH2
Some studies have suggested that variations in SLC39A8 may be associated with alcohol-related behaviors.
Genes within the ADH family, such as ADH1B, ADH1C, and ADH4, encode enzymes involved in alcohol metabolism. Variations in these genes can impact the rate of alcohol metabolism
Genes within the ALDH family, particularly ALDH2, encode enzymes that are responsible for the metabolism of acetaldehyde, a toxic byproduct of alcohol metabolism.
Even people with a genetic predisposition to alcohol abuse need a trigger to develop a substance abuse and/or addiction. Some risk factors include work or relationship stress, aggressive behavior in childhood, lack of parental supervision, peer pressure, physical or sexual abuse, and witnessing or being a victim of violence.
First signs of a possible alcohol abuse include a feeling to cut down alcohol, being annoyed when people criticize your drinking, feeling guilty about your drinking and the need for alcohol in the morning to get ready for the day (eye opener).
